History
Our association was founded on 24 November 1993 in Copenhagen as the European Association for the Consumption-Based Billing of Energy Costs (E.V.V.E.). Its creation was driven by the vision of harmonising energy cost allocation practices across Europe in response to the establishment of the European Single Market.
Bringing together leading companies from Germany, Denmark, France, Greece, the UK, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, E.V.V.E .was formed as a European Economic Interest Group (EEIG). From its inception, the association has played a pivotal role in advocating for energy efficiency, fair cost distribution, and digitalisation in buildings.
E.V.V.E. has worked closely with European institutions and national governments to support key regulatory developments, including the EU’s SAVE programme (1991) and subsequent directives that mandated consumption-based billing to improve energy efficiency and reduce CO₂ emissions.
Over three decades later, we continue to be the voice of energy and water data management in Europe, uniting industry leaders to drive smart and sustainable resource management in buildings. In September 2024, EVVE transitioned into a Belgian non-profit association (AISBL) to strengthen its institutional presence in Brussels. One year later, in 2025, it adopted the new name WE Data Europe to reflect its broader mission and growing scope.
