On 9 September, WE Data Europe represented by Managing Director Sofia Lettenbichler, presented its policy recommendations at the European Commission and EU Digital Water Coalition Workshop “Shaping the EU Digitalisation Action Plan for Water”.
As Veronica Manfredi, Director at DG Environment, put it in her concluding remarks:
“We do not know how much we are consuming.”
Therefore, measurement and water metering has been identified as top priorities for the Digitalisation Action Plan.
And the evidence is clear: smart water metering can reduce household water consumption by up to 25%. Learn more about the savings potential of smart water meters in our study: Evaluating the Role fo Water Metering in Reducing Water consumption.
Now to make the deployment of smart water meters happen, we need:
- Clear EU targets and a roadmap for roll-out: all new buildings equipped with smart water meters by 2030, and all buildings by 2035.
- A clear definition of what “smart” metering means: smart meters are remotely readable, enable automated data collection and give consumers and building managers access to high-frequency consumption data.
- A future-proof existing regulatory framework: use the revision of the Measuring Instruments Directive to enable digital solutions that already exist.
We have the technology. We have the evidence. And, as industry speakers echoed today, the solutions are ready. Now we need to make deployment happen and put smart water metering at the heart of Europe’s water resilience.
